Writers express interest in a Justice League vs. Avengers comic crossover
This week, Marvel Comics announced the relaunch of the Avengers series, with a new Avengers #1 set to be released this May. Coincidentally, DC Comics recently announced a major shakeup in the Justice League comics, with a new series to be released in May as well. The new Avengers series will be written by Jason Aaron, and the new Justice League series will be written by Scott Snyder.
While all of this is pretty exciting on its own, it got more exciting when Snyder took to Twitter to congratulate Aaron on his recent success. In response, Aaron thanked Snyder and stated that “Maybe we need to work up a new Justice League vs. Avengers crossover.” Snyder agreed and the conversation ended.

DC and Marvel have not had a crossover event in years, though they used to be far more common. Random intersections between the companies can be found throughout the 80s and 90s, with titles like The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans or DC vs. Marvel standing out as notable examples. The two companies even went so far as to merge their characters together and publish comics under the joint Amalgam Comics imprint at one point in time. However, these occasional partnerships died down as the years went on and ended in 2004 with JLA/Avengers, the last crossover between the two.
Before you get too excited though, I’ll interject a bit of realistic pessimism and say that this crossover is probably not going to happen. Marvel and DC have, in recent times, shown little to no interest in working together. The two have competing film franchises fighting over billions of dollars in profits and are also competing over a limited market when it comes to comic books. As of right now, a crossover simply doesn’t seem to be in the cards.
However, having two prolific writers simply mention a crossover is still a good sign. It reaffirms that there is still some interest in an event like this and that the companies know about it. So maybe, with enough pressure from fans, having a new Justice League vs. Avengers series wouldn’t be such a crazy idea. Or maybe, this event is destined to suffer the same perpetual postponement as Half Life 3 and the conclusion of A Song of Ice and Fire.
