What Is the DC Comics Absolute Universe?
The Absolute Universe is a bold, new imprint by DC Comics that reimagines iconic heroes with alternate origins, relationships, and challenges. This alternate reality is distinct from DC’s main continuity and brings fresh perspectives on popular characters. Though it was only introduced in late 2024, it is already redefining fan expectations and providing some solid stories to follow along with.
Warning, this article contains mild spoilers for the first issue of the current Absolute titles and DC All In Special #1.
What Is the DC Comics Absolute Universe?
The Absolute Universe is an alternate version of the DC Universe that exists within the DC Omniverse. So the Batman that exists in the Absolute Universe is different and distinct from the Batman that exists in the mainstream DC Universe. The events that take place in the Absolute Universe also stay within that universe and don’t have an impact on the mainstream universe, at least thus far. In these ways, it is similar to DC’s Injustice Universe or Marvel’s Ultimate Universe.
What Makes the DC Comics Absolute Universe Different?
What makes the Absolute DC Universe unique is the way it updates and modernizes the characters within it. In the Absolute Universe, classic heroes are stripped of some of their most classic characteristics, particularly those that give them power and privilege. Absolute Batman isn’t a billionaire; Absolute Wonder Woman isn’t raised by Amazons; and Absolute Superman has Kryptonian parents with working-class origins. The outcome is characters that are still as fantastical as ever but that end up more grounded and tangible.
Other characters change as well. The Joker never laughs; several Gotham City villains are just regular people; and Lois Lane is an agent for an evil corporation. In each of the Absolute Universe storylines so far, the traditional status quo is entirely different.
This is all intentional and fits in with the narrative behind the Absolute Universe. In the DC All In Special #1, we see Darkseid (Reading Order) infiltrate the Absolute Universe so that he can leave a universe driven by hope and enter one “driven by challenge, by turmoil.” He goes on to say that he wants to face off against DC’s heroes when they face greater odds, when they come without advantages, and where they are forced to burn brighter than ever just to survive. It is clear Darkseid believes he’ll have an advantage in this universe and that will lead to his ultimate victory.
A Fresh Take on Modern Issues
The other element that makes the Absolute DC Universe unique are the themes running through the comics. The Absolute Universe is clearly making a distinct effort to tackle real-world issues in a way that connects with readers today. By reimagining heroes as individuals who must work through life’s hardships without extraordinary resources, these stories explore themes of socioeconomic struggles, the power dynamics of wealth and poverty, and the role of community support.
Take Absolute Batman for instance. In this world, Batman’s parents weren’t rich, so he wasn’t able to use his wealth to launch his career as Batman and continuously fund his adventures. Even Alfred wasn’t there for him. Instead, he had to build his skills on his own and piggyback off infrastructure built by others.
Superman and Wonder Woman are similar. Superman has spent the last years defending impoverished people against the oppressive hand of a ruthless corporation. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman literally grew up in hell yet is now defending the mortal realm against evil.
What DC Comics Absolute Universe Comics Are Out Now?
Right now, there are only three comic books set within the DC Comics Absolute Universe. These are Absolute Batman, Absolute Superman, and Absolute Wonder Woman.
Are DC’s Absolute Universe Comics Connected?
A connected universe is a trademark feature of the DC Comics multiverse. Because of this, many fans are wondering if DC’s new Absolute Universe titles are going to connect to each other.
The answer appears to be a yes. Interviews from the creatives behind the Absolute titles indicate that crossovers are planned. This is also indicated by the fact that the Absolute Universe clearly has a larger narrative involving Darkseid on the horizon. So, all signs point to some epic clashes coming in the future of the Absolute Universe.
What’s Next for the Absolute Universe?
In 2024, three Absolute comics were released. In 2025, at least three more are on the way. Absolute Flash, Absolute Green Lantern, and Absolute Martian Manhunter are all set to release in 2025.
As already mentioned, there appears to be a crossover on the horizon as well. At minimum, we expect a major crossover that deals with Darkseid’s role in the Absolute Universe. However, it’s entirely possible that smaller crossovers occur as well.
The Absolute Universe in a Nutshell
In summation, the DC Comics Absolute Universe is a new comic book world populated by familiar characters. The stories told in this world are bold and exciting while taking time to examine the power dynamics of society. Right now, just a few heroes are featured in this universe, but more will be joining it soon. Plus, with a potential Darkseid clash coming, this universe clearly has a lot in store.
