This watching order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Iron Man (Tony Stark) throughout his Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances. This Iron Man Watching Order lists his appearances by order of their release date, providing a straightforward way to experience the character’s entire history.

This Iron Man Watching Order includes Iron Man’s main appearances and his supporting appearances. Main appearances are films that feature Iron Man as a central character while supporting appearances are films where he appears in a smaller capacity. These are separated into columns and explained when necessary.

Iron Man Phase One Watching Order

Iron Man is introduced in his first solo film and the first film in the entire MCU, Iron Man (Continuity). There is nothing to the MCU before this point, so nothing prior to this point is required viewing.

Iron Man tells Iron Man’s origin story and begins to explain his place in the world. Then, Iron Man 2 directly continues this narrative and expands on who Iron Man is and where he plans to go from his origins. Finally, the era concludes with The Avengers. This final film brings plot points from several different superhero origin stories together for a climactic team-up adventure.

Iron Man Phase Two Watching Order

This phase directly builds on what happened in the previous phase. Iron Man 3 sees the fallout from what happened to Iron Man in The Avengers while also expanding on what he is capable of as a hero. Then, like the previous era, this era concludes with another Avengers team-up. Avengers: Age of Ultron heavily incorporates Iron Man's past while also pushing the Avengers into the future.

Iron Man Phase Three Watching Order

Captain America: Civil War is another team-up movie, similar in many ways to the Avengers films. It deals with the world's superheroes taking sides on an issue and dramatically impacts Iron Man's life from this point onward.

After this film, Iron Man makes a few supporting appearances in Spider-Man: Homecoming. These follow-up on his interactions with Spider-Man in Civil War while also setting the stage for their relationship in the next two Avengers movies.

Finally, as the conclusion to this phase, Iron Man appears in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. These films are essentially part-one and part-two of a single storyline. Both have a massive effect on Iron Man's life.
