Dune Watching Order

The 2021 release of Dune started a new Dune series of films. This series is directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides and Zendaya as Chani. This series is not connected to any past Dune adaptation, so you don’t need to watch anything else before watching it.

Right now, this series just consists of Dune and Dune: Part Two. Together, these two movies present a faithful adaptation of the first Dune book. When watching them, just watch these two films in order, and you’ll have the full story.

However, this series has a lot more in store in the future. A TV series centered around the Bene Gesserit, Dune: Prophecy, is in the works and more Dune sequels are being planned.

The 1984 Dune film by David Lynch was the first version of the series to make it to the big screen. This film generally presents a reinterpretation of the events of the first Dune book. However, this version of Dune is less accurate to the books than the 2021 version.

Are the Dune Movies Based on Books?

Yes, all of the Dune movies are based on books. The recent Dune movies, Dune and Dune: Part Two, retell the story of the first Dune book. Dune by David Lynch is based on that same book.

If the recent Dune series continues, it will likely follow other Dune books. These include: Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. All of these are also available in a large Box Set.

Are the Dune Movies Part of a Series?

The recently released Dune movies are part of their own series. However, right now, this series is still pretty young and, thus, pretty small. It currently only consists of Dune and Dune: Part Two.

Will There Be a Dune: Part 3?

Right now, Dune: Part 3 has not been officially announced. However, a TV series centered around the origins of the Bene Gesserit has been officially announced. This series is currently set to debut on Max at some time in late 2024.
