WandaVision Episode 7 Explained
This week’s WandaVision was an absolute trip that capitalized on the mockumentary-style of filming that dominated shows from the early 2000s. It also revealed a lot when it comes to the mysteries that have surrounded this show since it began. However, there are still plenty of unanswered questions that we can try to tackle right here, right now.
Warning: spoilers for WandaVision Episodes 1-7, earlier MCU movies, and general information from other MCU projects follow. Plus, spoilers from a few Marvel comics also follow.
Commercial
Each episode’s commercial has focused on exploring a traumatic moment from Wanda’s past. This one is no different and, thus, is very easy to explain. It looks at the state of depression Wanda fell into after Vision was killed in Avengers: Infinity War and the fact that he was not brought back in Avengers: Endgame. The loss of Vision pushed her over the edge and led to her creation of a new reality where she and Vision can live in peace and harmony. Essentially, this commercial explored how the premise of WandaVision came about.
However, this commercial also has a twist to it, a twist with massive implications on what this series has been building up to. In the comics, every reality within the Multiverse has a Nexus Being. This individual is the center of mystic energy within their respective reality. In the comics, the mainstream Marvel Universe’s Nexus Being is Wanda. The product in this commercial is called “Nexus”. This could be a simple reference to the comics. However, it could also be hinting that Wanda is the Nexus Being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well. We’ll talk more about this later on.
Agatha
As we’ve been speculating for weeks, Episode 7 finally revealed that a mysterious individual has been manipulating Wanda’s reality since it was created. As we’ve also been speculating, Agnes is actually Agatha Harkness and is the witch at the center of this manipulation. But why has she been doing all of this? What is her master plan?
One of the most likely answers is that Agatha plans to gain power through Wanda’s children. In earlier explanations, we discussed the fact that, in the comics, Wanda’s children were used to give power to a devilish being named Mephisto. Agatha’s continued interest in Wanda’s children indicates she may be trying to use their power in a similar way.
Agatha could be using this power for herself, simply amplifying the magic it is already clear she has. Or, she could be using it to summon or power-up a demon, like Mephisto, as Agatha has made many references to the “devil” throughout the show. Either way, stopping Agatha from achieving her goal could serve as the finale for the series.
Nexus
The other possibility when it comes to Agatha’s ultimate plan is that it relates to the concept of the Nexus. In Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Scarlet Witch miniseries, collected in Scarlet Witch by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning, Wanda explores her status as a Nexus Being. In this comic, she enters a basement and finds a book there, much like she did in this episode. This book elaborates on what a Nexus Being is and sets up a showdown against a villain named Lore.
Lore was the Nexus Being of a different universe. However, Lore was evil and used her power to invade and destroy other universes, appearing as a spirit first but then consuming the energy of each world’s Nexus Being in order to take on physical form. She was called to the mainstream Marvel Universe accidentally by Wanda, stating: “I have come through your nightmares through the jagged pathways of your own tortured soul! You have beckoned me here, welcomed me!” Eventually, Wanda was able to defeat Lore but the battle was intense.
It seems possible that Agatha is actually the Nexus being of another reality. This would explain why she has not appeared in any previous Marvel movie, as her ghostly form can only take on substance in Wanda’s altered version of reality; why Billy could not read her thoughts, as she does not actually exist in reality; and how an alternate version of Pietro showed up, as she may be from the reality of the X-Men films.
If this is true, the physical form of Agatha Harkness may simply be possessed by the intangible form of Lore, justifying why Agatha, typically portrayed as a hero in the comics, appears as a villain in this show. If Lore is simply a spirit looking for a body, it could also explain her interest in Vision, as Agatha has been shown subtly manipulating Vision for a long time now. This hints that Lore’s ultimate plan is to use Wanda and her children’s power to take over Vision’s body, thus making her one of the most powerful beings in the universe. This is a pretty big stretch, especially if the reference to Nexus was just a wink at the comics, but it also could be what ends up happening.
Monica Rambeau
The other mystery introduced in this episode comes from Monica Rambeau. In the comics, Monica has superpowers and occasionally operates as one of the Avengers. This episode puts her on that pathway by officially giving her at least some of these powers.
In the comics, Monica has the ability to transform into any form of energy on the electromagnetic spectrum. This allows her to emit powerful energy waves, become intangible, or fly at the speed of light. At this point, the show has only had Monica take a look at the electromagnetic spectrum and manipulate some energy. However, I would imagine her powers could expand further, especially leading up to her appearance in the next Captain Marvel movie.
