WandaVision Episode 6 Explained

Episode 6 of WandaVision introduces mystery and terror through a Halloween/90s themed approach. The episode built on a lot of speculation from the past while also adding a few new twists. So, let’s explain what happened and see what answers we can discover.

Warning: spoilers for WandaVision Episodes 1-6, earlier MCU movies, and general information from other MCU projects follow. Plus, spoilers from a few Marvel comics also follow.

This episode’s “commercial break” is layered and a little harder to explain than some of the previous commercials. Like the other commercials, it focuses on exploring an element of Wanda’s past trauma. However, this time, the focus seems to be on events from both Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.

Commercial

The commercial centers around a boy trapped on a deserted island. This mirrors Wanda’s situation near the conclusion of Civil War, as she and a few other heroes were imprisoned in a prison in the middle of the ocean. The boy is then presented with an opportunity where something magical can save him yet he is unable to utilize it properly and ends up dying. This mirrors Wanda’s situation in Infinity War, as her magic appeared to be able to stop Thanos yet, ultimately, failed to do so. The commercial also concludes by reflecting Wanda’s current feeling: that she is trapped in a lonely place of isolation.

In addition to all of this, the commercial has potential ties to the conspiracy surrounding Wanda’s reality. In previous explanations, we’ve discussed the possibility that a person or entity is manipulating Wanda’s reality in order to grow stronger off of her powers. This could be what the shark in the commercial represents, an individual growing stronger from magic while Wanda fades away.

Manipulation

Speaking of this potential manipulation, episode six gives us more indication that someone or something is taking advantage of Wanda’s breakdown. When questioned about how she created her Westview reality in the first place, she appears to be unable to remember what she did.

In addition, this episode gives a lot of devil references. Pietro tells the children to “unleash hell”, calls them “demon spawn” and describes Westview as “charming as hell”. Meanwhile, Agnes is dressed as a witch and delivers a crackling laugh. Devil references are key here because, as we explained in previous articles, one major theory is that the demon Mephisto is manipulating Wanda in order to absorb the power of her children. All of this evidence seems to back up this theory.

S.W.O.R.D.

In addition to someone manipulating Wanda for their own ends, it is becoming more and more clear that S.W.O.R.D. was manipulating Vision for their own ends. The previous episode showed that they were experimenting on his dead body, a direct violation of his will. Now, this episode implies that Director Hayward’s entire interest in Westview is in retrieving Vision, not saving the residents of the town.

It could be possible that S.W.O.R.D. is the result of the manipulation and that their presence there simply serves to further their goals, under the guise of stopping things. However, this seems a bit less likely, as their interest seems to be on Vision while the manipulation seems to be on Wanda.

Quicksilver

Both of these issues also could relate to one of the episode’s biggest mysteries: Quicksilver. Pietro’s reappearance is almost entirely unexplained and seems to be one of the few elements in Wanda’s reality that she had no part in bringing about. In fact, we’re not entirely even sure that this Pietro is Pietro. His appearance has changed to that of a Pietro from an alternate film universe, one of his childhood memories doesn’t line up with Wanda’s, and, when Wanda asks him a direct question about their past, he changes the subject and never actually gives an answer.

So the question is: what is Pietro there for? It could be that he is the source of the manipulation or that he is working for this entity. This would explain why he makes devil references, shows specific interest in Wanda’s children, and is elated when the children begin to display their powers, as they are the source of power Mephisto is trying to cultivate and then steal. However, he could also be an interested third party, such as a S.W.O.R.D. agent, in disguise. This would explain why he questions Wanda about the nature of her reality and asks how she created it. In my opinion though, his ties to a devilish manipulator are stronger than his ties to S.W.O.R.D.

Agnes

Like Quicksilver, Agnes has an unexplainable origin, makes numerous devil references, and has a direct interest in Wanda’s children. Past episodes have indicated that Agnes knows more than she lets on and that she may even be playing a part in the manipulation of Wanda’s reality.

However, her appearance in this episode is different than it has been. She appears on the edge of town and for the most part, acts like a normal, scared citizen of Westview. Agnes’ interaction with Vision could be completely normal but it could also be a way to manipulate him, as their conversation directly leads to him leaving the boundaries of Wanda’s reality, which directly leads to Wanda expanding the scope of this reality. If this was her plan, it worked perfectly. However, like Quicksilver, the exact circumstances surrounding Agnes are unclear at best.

Monica Rambeau

Like the pervious episode, this episode gives an indication that Monica Rambeau may be on the way to gaining superpowers, like she has in the comics. This episode has Darcy confirm that Monica’s blood was altered by her exposure to Wanda’s magic. It is unclear if this will have an impact on the events of WandaVision or if it is setup for the next Captain Marvel movie.
