Review: Avatar- The Last Airbender: The Lost Adventures

Quick Summary

Pros: There are fun moments throughout the book. A few of the stories offer seriously enjoyable reads that expand on the Avatar universe.

Cons: The majority of the book’s stories are just average.

Overall: This collection of short stories is a bit mixed but is generally fun to read. Most of the stories are good for a quick laugh or an alright tale about Team Avatar. There are also a few that offer a quick but rewarding trip within the Avatar universe, though these are in the minority. Overall, this collection will appeal to readers looking for more Avatar, not to those looking for the best Avatar comics out there.

Story

Avatar: The Last Airbender- The Lost Adventures is a collection of mostly short stories that trend positive. The majority of the stories are quick, offer a few laughs, but are generally not that memorable. Luckily, there are a few stories that save the day by offering truly worthwhile glimpses into the Avatar universe. These stories highlight great character moments or offer a unique look at an otherwise unseen time in the show’s timeline. In the end, this mix of quality will make this volume something worth reading to some but not all.

The majority of the stories in The Lost Adventures are very short and end up being pretty average. Some offer a few laughs, like Sokka’s time as a member of the Fire Nation Army, while others are generally unremarkable, like the battle between Bumi and Toph. None of these stories are downright bad but few offer serious positives.

However, the rare gems that do offer serious positives are great. Some of these stories show unique moments for the characters, like Aang’s discovery of an abandoned Air Nomad temple or his attempt to calm a child in the face of Combustion Man’s attack. Other stories expand upon the series by showing moments that otherwise would go unseen, like Katara and Aang’s conversation about their kiss or Aang’s flashback to the first time he saw a dragon. These stories are what help make this volume worthwhile.

Art

The artwork in The Lost Adventures jumps around significantly when it comes to quality. The majority of the chapters are of average quality and do not stand out as either significantly positive or significantly negative. This level of quality essentially defines the level of visual quality throughout the book, as it is the most pervasive. There are a few chapters where character depictions look a bit strange or where the visuals just look off. However, for the most part, the artwork in this collection is just average.

Continuity

Avatar: The Last Airbender- The Lost Adventures takes place across the entirety of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series.

The story of the series continues in Avatar: The Last Airbender- The Promise (Review).
