Kid Flash (Wallace West) Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Kid Flash (Wallace “Wally” West)  throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of his appearances, but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

Wallace “Wally” West was introduced in the New 52 era and has no appearances prior to this era. Originally, Wally was introduced as a new interpretation of the original Wally West. However, at the beginning of the Rebirth era, it was clarified that the new Wally West is a completely separate and unique character.

In this era, Wally is introduced through The Flash series. Here, he is introduced as a normal person, his superhero origin is revealed, and he makes his initial ties to the Flash (Reading Order). In general, all of this depicts his move toward the moniker of Kid Flash.

Notes
  1. These issues technically star a different version of Wally. However, this version of Wally is directly tied to the main version and has a direct impact on his origin as a superhero.

Rebirth

The transition from the New 52 to the Rebirth era introduces very few continuity changes for Kid Flash. However, the events of DC Universe: Rebirth officially clarified that he is a completely separate character from the original Wally West.

In this era, Wally's adventures mostly begin as he takes up the identity of Kid Flash. From here, his role in The Flash becomes far more pronounced and he begins an association with the Teen Titans (Reading Order). Part way through this era, Wally's association with these groups is slightly interrupted as he becomes involved with Deathstroke (Reading Order) and his newly created Defiance team. However, as the era progresses, the majority of Kid Flash's adventures are still detailed within either The Flash or Teen Titans.

Notes
  1. This comic only features a small appearance from Wally. However, it is the first comic to officially define a difference between this Wally West and the original Wally West so it is worthwhile in the way it reestablishes continuity.
  2. This issue only features a cameo from Kid Flash that helps set up the next issue.
  3. Wally is a minor, supporting character in this story arc. However, it further elaborates on his connection to the other Wally West.
  4. Kid Flash has a rather minor role in the Dark Nights: Metal (Reading Order) event. However, this role slightly expands on his current relationship with both Barry Allen (Reading Order) and Iris West.
  5. Only the "Holiday Spirit" story from this issues is relevant to this reading order. Kid Flash's role in this story is very small.
  6. This series is mostly about the main members of the Justice League (Reading Order). However, issue #35 features Wally's "first League ride-along" and, thus, may be worthwhile to see. Meanwhile, issues #42-43 feature brief, supporting appearances from Kid Flash.
