Steppenwolf Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Steppenwolf throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of his appearances, but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

At the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe was reset during the Flashpoint (Reading Order) event. This appears to have wiped all of Steppenwolf’s appearances from DC’s continuity.

Steppenwolf is reintroduced in Darkseid’s initial attempt at invading Earth, as part of the Justice League’s (Reading Order) origin. However, his primary role in this era mostly plays out through the Earth 2 (Reading Order) series. In this series, he plays a major role in establishing the status quo of Earth 2 and is one of the comic’s chief antagonists.

Notes
  1. These issues feature Steppenwolf in a minor, supporting role. They simply feature him as one of Darkseid's vast array of powerful underlings.
  2. This issue is a flashback that shows some of Steppenwolf's actions before the majority of the events in the Earth 2 (Reading Order) series. This issue can easily be skipped if necessary.

Rebirth

The transition from the New 52 to the Rebirth eras seems to have little effect on Steppenwolf's continuity. Like most New Gods, Steppenwolf's role in the Rebirth era is heavily influenced by what took place in Justice League: Darkseid War (Reading Order).

In this era, Steppenwolf only makes an extremely brief appearance. His role in the Superman series is very small and simply serves as a way of reaffirming his connection to the forces of Apokolips.
