Mister Miracle Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Mister Miracle (Scot/Scott Free) throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of his appearances but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

At the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe was reset. In this new continuity, Mister Miracle’s history seems to have been almost entirely wiped clean. This specifically removes his past interactions with Earth’s heroes, making it so he has never met them before.

In the first half of this era, Mister Miracle has a moderate role in the progression of the Earth 2 (Reading Order) comics. In these comics, he joins the rest of the heroes of Earth 2 in opposing Darkseid (Reading Order). However, these appearances contradict previous depictions of Mister Miracle, his later appearances within this era, and even themselves in a few places. In addition, Mister Miracle’s role in the Earth 2 saga is almost never mentioned after it ends. For these reasons, we’ve listed his entire involvement in this saga as “Extra” rather than “Essential”.

Near the end of this era, Mister Miracle makes a more lasting and significant appearance. He plays a supporting role across most issues from the Darkseid War (Reading Order) event. Here, he meets the Justice League (Reading Order) for the first time and readers even have a chance to see him together with Big Barda (Reading Order) once more.

Justice League issues are from the Vol. 2 series

Notes
  1. As mentioned above, Mister Miracle's time in the Earth 2 (Reading Order) series is a bit troubled by continuity mismatches. We have listed it as "Extra" instead of "Essential" because his time on Earth 2 is never mentioned after it ends and because it radically contradicts with all of his appearances afterward.
  2. Mister Miracle only makes an extremely brief appearance in this issue. However, it is helpful in explaining how the entire event progresses.

Rebirth

The transition from the New 52 to the Rebirth era does not create any specific continuity changes for Mister Miracle. However, his storyline in the Rebirth era stands pretty independently from his storyline in the New 52 era. Instead, it mostly references the relationship between Miracle and Big Barda that was established across Jack Kirby's run on the New Gods.

In this era, Mister Miracle and Big Barda (Reading Order) star in the Mister Miracle miniseries. Though this series has somewhat unclear ties to the main DC Comics continuity, it still forms an essential part of both characters' lives at this point in time. Outside of this, Mister Miracle only makes a quick cameo in the Dark Nights: Metal (Reading Order) event.

Mister Miracle issues are from the Vol. 4 series

Notes
  1. Mister Miracle's appearance in the Dark Nights: Metal (Reading Order) event is very quick and does not advance his general character progression. However, it helps emphasize that the relationship he formed with the Justice League (Reading Order), during the Darkseid War (Reading Order) event, is still around.

Universe

The Universe era is essentially an extension of the Rebirth era, as it maintains the same continuity. Mister Miracle's presence here generally continues his connection to the Justice League (Reading Order). However, it doesn't reference anything specific from the last two eras.

In this era, Mister Miracle only really appears as a supporting character. His appearances are all limited to brief moments that simply show him helping the Justice League with a problem. These appearances are also all related to the narrative stretching across Scott Snyder's Justice League series (Reading Order), climaxing with the Dark Nights: Death Metal event.

Mister Miracle has a pretty small role in the Dark Nights: Death Metal event. His appearances in issues #1, #3, and Trinity Crisis #1 are small but emphasize his specific skills. However, his appearances in issues #5-7 are extremely small and only feature him as one of many, many heroes participating in this event.

Other Appearances
  • Female Furies
    • Mister Miracle appears in issues #2-6 of the Female Furies series. His role in this series is pretty minor but emphasizes his connection to Big Barda (Reading Order) in a way some fans may find interesting. However, the Female Furies series seems to be mostly unconnected to the main DC continuity. All of Miracle's appearances in this series are collected in Female Furies.
