Midnighter Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major Midnighter storylines throughout DC Comics. It does not encompass every one of his appearances, but is a timeline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

At the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe and the Wildstorm Universe were combined and reset. In this new universe, Midnighter was introduced through the Stormwatch (Reading Order) series. His role in this new universe is independent of his role in the previous universe.

Midnighter’s largest role in this era was in the Stormwatch series. However, after this series was cancelled, he went on to have a small role alongside Dick Grayson (Reading Order) in the Grayson series and a starring role in the Midnighter solo series.

Notes

1. This issue of Grifter relates back to the events in the first Stormwatch story arc. It is also referenced in Stormwatch #7. However, it really does not have a large impact on Midnighter's life so reading it is completely optional.
2. Though Midnighter had a substantial role in the earlier issues of the Grayson series, his appearances alongside Dick Grayson became less pronounced once the Midnighter solo series began. Thus, these particular appearances in Grayson and Batman and Robin Eternal contribute to the continued friendship between Midnighter and Dick Grayson but are not major showcases for Midnighter's character.

Rebirth

Midnighter's role in the Rebirth era is extremely small and only really consists of one miniseries. This series is a near direct continuation of the New 52 Midnighter series.

This rather small role is explained by a shift in DC Comics publications that occurred at this time. During Rebirth, DC Comics created a new Wildstorm Universe, in The Wild Storm series, and began shifting most of the old Wildstorm characters to this new Universe.
