Mera Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Mera throughout DC Comics. It does not encompass every one of her appearances, but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

With the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe’s continuity was reset. Mera’s history was wiped clean and all of her prior appearances were removed from the current continuity. The majority of the aspects of her pre-New 52 character that definitively remained were the retcons that took place through the Brightest Day series.

Mera was then reintroduced through the Aquaman series, where she typically played either a main or supporting role. Her appearances in the New 52 were also mostly in conjunction with appearances from Aquaman (Reading Order).

For a more in-depth breakdown of Mera’s appearances in this era, see ComicBookWire’s Mera New 52 Reading Order.

Notes
  1. Mera's role in this series does not contribute much to the development of her individual character so it can be skipped if necessary.
  2. Without spoiling what happens in this story arc, it is hard to explain why these issues are non-essential to Mera's character. However, reading them helps allow the story arc as a whole to make more sense.

Rebirth

The jump from New 52 to Rebirth doesn’t change much for Mera. There are no continuity alterations between the two eras. In fact, Mera’s adventures in the Rebirth era immediately pick up on the last Aquaman story arc from the New 52 era, Aquaman: Out of Darkness (Review).

In this era, Mera is one of the central characters in the Aquaman series. Outside of this, she stars in the Mera: Queen of Atlantis miniseries, which builds on her role from Aquaman. Together, these appearances tell a streamlined narrative that builds until the Aquaman/Suicide Squad: Sink Atlantis (Reading Order) crossover event.

Notes

  1. This issue only briefly features Mera and mostly focuses on the rest of the Justice League (Reading Order).
  2. Most of these issues feature Mera in a way that impacts her potential future.
  3. These issues only briefly feature Mera but do explain what she was doing during the Dark Nights: Metal (Reading Order) event. However, they don't really fit well into Mera's continuity. This is because the Aquaman series and her solo miniseries have her on non-stop adventures, leaving no time for the events of these comics to take place. However, the end of Metal has a direct impact on the end of Aquaman #38 and the other issues marked here take place before Metal. So, this makes for some messy continuity. In the end, we recommend reading these minor Mera appearances whenever you want as long as you read the end of Metal before the end of the Aquaman: Kingslayer (Review) arc.
