Harley Quinn Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Harley Quinn throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of her appearances, but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

With the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe’s continuity was reset. Harley Quinn’s criminal history and her relationship with the Joker are clearly maintained. However, the exact details behind these elements of her history are altered as they are reintroduced to this new universe.

Harley Quinn makes her New 52 debut through the Suicide Squad series. From this point onward, almost all of her appearances are tied to the Suicide Squad (Reading Order) in some way. This puts her in a situation to make brief cameo appearances, alongside her new team, in other comics. Later in the era, she also makes a few cameo appearances on her own, though these are typically rather small.

Readers should also be aware that this reading order only really covers half of Harley Quinn’s appearances from this era. Since her solo series appears to exist in its own continuity/timeline, all of her appearances in that series can be found in ComicBookWire’s “Harley Quinn Solo Reading Order“. For more information on this split, see our “Harley Quinn Reading Order Homepage“.

Notes
  1. Harley appears alongside the rest of the Suicide Squad in these issues. Because of this, she ends up being just one of many supporting characters in the story. Because of this, these stories can mostly be skipped by fans exclusively looking for great moments from Harley Quinn.
  2. These Birds of Prey (Reading Order) issues technically occur sometime before Suicide Squad #29 but it is not exactly clear when.
  3. Harley's appearances here are still tied to her role on the Suicide Squad. However, these appearances place far more of a focus on her as an individual.
  4. The Suicide Squad's appearance in these issues of Superman/Wonder Woman (Reading Order) does not exactly match with the continuity of the Suicide Squad's team lineup. This is because Parasite joins the team during Reverse Flash's last mission, yet both appear on a mission in Superman/Wonder Woman. Despite not making much sense in terms of continuity, it can be assumed that this appearance happened around this general time period.
  5. Harley only makes a very brief appearance in this issue. However, it helps establish that she is familiar with Catwoman, possibly bringing some of her pre-New 52 history back into the fold.
  6. Harley appears in one of several stories from this issue. It does not do much to advance her personal story but it still may be of interest for readers who want to see her somewhat separate from the Suicide Squad.
  7. Harley only has a minor supporting role in these issues. However, they are helpful in reestablishing the relationship between Harley and Poison Ivy.
