Black Manta Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Black Manta (David Hyde) throughout DC Comics. It does not encompass every one of his appearances, but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

At the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe was reset. In this new continuity, Black Manta took up his role as one of Aquaman’s (Reading Order) primary enemies in the early issues of the Aquaman series. From here, he participated in the Forever Evil (Review) event, which directly leads to his role in the New Suicide Squad series.

  1. Both of these issues happen at the same time and cover roughly the same material. However, the Aquaman issue gives a more in-depth focus on Black Manta.
  2. Black Manta only makes a brief appearance in this issue. Reading it simply confirms that he is still in prison after the events of the previous arc.
