News: DC Comics announces Blackhawk movie with Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg is officially set to take on the world of DC Comics.
This Tuesday, DC Comics announced the creation of a Blackhawk movie with legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg. Spielberg is coming into the project hot off the success of Ready Player One, which was also a collaboration with Warner Brothers. Joining him will be David Koepp, who has already worked with Spielberg on projects like Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Though the film is based on a comic book series, it will likely be very different from the majority of comic book movies out today. The film is set to follow Blackhawk, leader of an elite squadron of WWII-era pilots. In comics, this group is typically just a collection of highly trained soldiers, not superpowered entities. If the film follows the comics, it is likely that this will be closer to a Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan than it will be to any of his other works.
The Blackhawks have been in existence since the 1940s, when they were one of the most popular comics of the time. However, in the modern age, the team has failed to drum up anything close to that level of popularity. Their last solo series was cancelled after only eight issues and the characters mostly vanished altogether. Recently though, the team appeared again in the Dark Nights: Metal series. Though their role in that series was minor, it, together with this film, could signal a resurgence for the team.
We’re very excited with the prospect of this film and what it could mean for movies and comic books. Make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest to stay up to date with more information as it arrives.
