News: New Shazam series will resolve a five-year-old cliffhanger

Way back in 2013, comic writer Geoff Johns detailed a new origin for Shazam. In a solo storyline (Review), readers saw Billy Batson start a life with his new family and gain the powers of a superhero. However, once this narrative was complete, Shazam’s appearances in the DC Universe became less frequent and his personal story was all but ignored.

Dr. Sivana and Mr. Mind’s cliffhanger of a team-up

This left several plot threads wide open and completely unresolved. The biggest of these unresolved elements was the storyline’s cliffhanger ending. This ending took place on the comic’s final page, where the villainous Dr. Sivana had a chance encounter with the equally villainous Mr. Mind. Sivana and Mind began to talk with one another and formed what appeared to be the precursor to an evil team-up. The comic even concluded by stating that this was “The Beginning” of something larger. However, the result of this team-up was never seen and readers were left teetering on the edge of this massive cliffhanger.

Now, after five years, a new Shazam series may finally give fans the answers they have been waiting for. According to DC’s November Solicitations, the first issue of the new Shazam series will feature “the bizarre team-up of Dr. Sivana and Mr. Mind as they set off to build a society all their own.” This seems to confirm that this new comic will contain the direct continuation of at least some plot threads from Shazam’s origin story.

I, for one, am excited to have Shazam back in comics again and even more excited to see the resolution to a five-year-old cliffhanger. With Geoff Johns finishing more of these old storylines, I’m also hopeful that we’ll eventually get to see “Aquaman: Rise of The Seven Seas”, another five-year-old cliffhanger.
