From the Comics: C-3PO’s Droid Spy Network
In the Star Wars movies, C-3PO is primarily known for his role as a comic relief character rather than his contributions to the success of the movie heroes. However, the Star Wars comics expand the importance of his character by placing him in a rather unexpected role, leader of an entire spy network.
In the Poe Dameron series, it is revealed that, sometime after the events of Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi, C-3PO became the Resistance’s chief spymaster. These comics explain that, in the Star Wars universe, droids often go completely unnoticed by humans and that this feature makes them perfect for surreptitiously gathering information. C-3PO has taken advantage of this by having droids infiltrate numerous different worlds and reporting back what they learn.
Later Poe Dameron issues go on to demonstrate that C-3PO does not just receive information from his droid underlings, he also is able to control them. While cornered by hostiles on a mission with Poe, C-3PO reveals that knows an override signal that allows him to create a new set of commands for almost any droid in his spy network. He used this ability to command a host of robots to protect Poe and then used his newfound allies to escape the planet. However, C-3PO is often reluctant to utilize this power, as it exposes his operatives and renders them incapable of serving as spies in the future.
Though C-3PO’s spy network is only explained through the comic books, it also plays a pivotal role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In this film, when the heroes arrive at Maz’s tavern, a droid notices BB-8 enter with them. This droid relays this information back to the Resistance, which allows them to get to the tavern in time to stop an attack by the First Order. Had C-3PO’s spy network not been in existence, the heroes may not have made it out of the tavern alive. Knowing about the droid spies also adds some background detail to the movie and is simply a fun expansion of the Star Wars universe.
